Happy Monday GPOders!
We start the week with an update from Julie Prince in southwest Georgia. Julie has shared her fabulous summer and fall garden before (check out those presentations here: Julie's Georgia Garden and Julie's Garden in Late Summer and Fall), and I'm excited to get an update on how her space continues to grow and evolve
This is Julie Prince in Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia. I am sending you this compilation of photos taken mostly from late summer to the present! There are many images to choose from, so use your favorite.
We have endured a pretty dry and hot summer this year and we are still very dry. Limelight hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight', zones 4–8) dropped all the leaves during the week the daily heat index ranged from 108° to 112° despite daily watering. The leaves of many perennial plants burned. Needless to say we are enjoying cooler weather although it is still warmer than normal for mid-November.
Julie shared these amazing “Black Stockings” fountain herbs (Pennisetum x “Black Stockings”, Zones 8–11 or annual) in previous shipments, and they never disappoint. Its height and huge, arching leaves are so lovely that even Julie's dog seems to admire it!
Julie also creates beautiful container plantings. In this pot, the silver dust miller is a perfect backdrop for a lovely light pink geranium.
The color combination of silver foliage and pink flowers makes another appearance in this bright pink canna bed.
Julie has so many caper plants in her garden, but one of my personal favorites is this variegated blue trumpet vine (Thunbergia grandiflora 'Variegata', zones 8-11 or annual) that turns a boring fence into something spectacular.
Another scene full of hot pink! A cloud of pink muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillarisZones 7-10) looks heavenly above a burst of purple-pink Mexican heather (Cuphea hyssopifoliaZones 8-11).
But Julie has a lot more than roses in her plantings. This sunny combination of yellow mums and golden lantana is a real bright spot.
Green also makes a sensational appearance in Julie's garden. Oxalis, bright green sedum and heavenly bamboo (Nandina domesticaZones 6-9) are a great example of the diversity and interest available in green foliage.
Julie has endless creativity with her packaging. Putting this beautiful bowl on top of a pedestal made it much more interesting. Covering the post with this stunning blue trumpet vine takes it over the top!
Julie is able to mix colors, textures and shapes in such an artistic way. The longer you look at this bed, the more amazing plants and combinations you will find.
This is a public service announcement that more people need to plant conifers in containers! This small arborvitae is simple but majestic against a sea of alternanthera 'Purple Prince' (Alternanthera brazilian 'Purple Prince', Zones 9-11 or annual).
Julie sent so many amazing photos, we are going back to her beautiful garden tomorrow. Have a nice day and we hope to see you there!
