Happy Friday GPOders!
We've reached the end of Cherry's fall journey Heronswood Garden. He has shown us so many amazing scenes from the botanic garden, but he has saved a special treat for the final presentation. (Be sure to check back if you missed any of the previous parts of this series: Part 1, Part 2i Part 3)
The best part of my visit was spending time with Riz Reyes (Assistant Principal at Heronswood from 2022)!
I was quite inspired to see Riz create this stunningly beautiful edible mushroom centerpiece for them Heronswood face-to-face class: “A raid for fungi, with David Biek”. I also had the pleasure of watching him cook some of the mushrooms before serving them to the class participants. Delicious vegan sauce! Thank you so much Riz! It's a really fun day for me.
Forage greens from the garden for the centerpiece. Here's a video of how he created the centerpiece: Video by Riz from Cherry's Instagram
A wonderful alternative to the usual floral and pumpkin Thanksgiving table centerpiece, don't you think? Note the “featured plants” panel in the background.
Copies in class. Not sure if they were brought by the participants.
Rice cooking various mushrooms with a delicious vegan sauce. They were served with toasted baguettes.
i went gaga over these the moment we arrived! Riz grew these gorgeous Japanese chrysanthemums from cuttings! 👏👏 I think they are spider chrysanthemums, possibly the Tarantula series. When I posted about these on my social media, several commented on how hard it is to find spider chrysanthemums. 🥲
Riz has a truly enviable collection of spider chrysanthemums in so many vibrant colors.
There is much to admire about these curly and unusual flowers.
However, you still can't go wrong with the more common mom (Dendranthema grandifloraZones 7-9 or annually).
Coarse-leaved hydrangea 'Elegant Sound Pavilion' (Hydrangea aspera 'Elegant Sound Pavilion', zones 7–10). Heronswood has the most unique hydrangeas I have ever seen.
I was all over this compact tongue fern (Pyrrosia lingua “Compact”, zones 7-10) hanging planter It is one of the many pyrrosias in Riz's private collection.
Thanks for another amazing trip to a stunning botanical garden, Cherry! I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets tons of travel inspiration from the gardens you visit and share with us.
